As an academic and career advisor, you learn that success has many facets. For most students, personal success and the development of a person's "why" are the persistence factors for academic success and professional development. Parkside, was a unique experience in being to develop others professionally and academically while managing students' personal factors.

Professional Development

When you work on diverse teams, it's important to create a space where people feel heard and understood. Through my professional development planning, I've learned how to strategize development outcomes, assessing individual growth, and how to foster trust.

At OWLS half-day experience, advisors were able to do team building activities, talk abstractly about their communication dysfunctions, and learn how to translate positive individual and group dynamics back into the office.

"Leadership contains certain elements of good management, but it requires that you inspire, that you build durable trust. For an organization to be not just good but to win, leadership means evoking participation larger than the job description, commitment deeper than any job contract's wording."

Technology and Learning

In a digital age, it was crucial for me to adapt to how students learned. In my facilitation, I used a range of interactive programs like Kahoot! and Playfactile.

As students engaged in a range of Career Advising  topics like informational interviews, preparing for career fairs, 30 second- elevators pitches, interviewing skills, optimizing HandShake, etc., I wanted to assess their knowledge through digital retention tools.

In building a larger audience and brand for the Advising and Career Center, communication vehicles like Instagram and SnapChat worked for tapping into a larger student audience to view resources and attend events.

"A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and instill a love of learning."                                                                                           - Brad Henry
